Uyuni Salt Flats Tour

After becoming legal in Bolivia we set off on a 5 day tour called the Western Circuit from Tupiza up to Uyuni. There is 6 in our group, us, a couple from the Netherlands Lizbeth and Vem, our driver Dionisio, and our cook Gemena.

Day 1 - Lama-Mania
We saw tons and I mean tons of lamas roaming through the hills. Our guide explained that at night they don’t have to herd them but that the lamas come back to the pueblos all by themselves (very obedient:). They mark the lamas with bright pink things in both of their ears which looks kinda cute.

The baby lamas are truly adorable and very curious

Our awesome chef and driver :)

Villages
  • Houses purely mud and stone
  • Freezing at night blistering hot during the day
  • Few villages have electricity and those that do recieved it only 2 years ago
  • Few schools, kids travel 4-8 hrs to get education
  • 1 out of 20 villages have any kind of medical facility
  • Only thing that grows/survives out here are the lamas, they trade/sell the lama fur in Tupiza for meats, fruits, veges, rice, beans etc...

Before in any earlier post I mentioned how much I love the country but this is way beyond just living in the country this is like living in an ancient civilization. Pure rustic.

The children
Innocent
Happy
Loveable

There was this adorable little boy watching a guy hang up power cords in one of the villages. When we got his attention and asked him if we could take a photo he walked right over to us and struck a pose. Priceless. We offered him a sucker which he readily accepted with a huge smile.

Along the road there was this girl, literally in the middle of nowhere, selling wool bracelets, socks, head warmers, gloves, and coin purses, everything made out of lama fur.

Of course we had to buy some :)
